SURVEY: HELP HEALTH CARE PRACTITIONERS UNDERSTAND PATIENTS WITH COCHLEAR IMPLANTS

clipboard clear background

If you or your child has received a cochlear implant within the past year, please complete the 5-10 minute survey. The survey was designed by the University of Iowa Cochlear Implant Research Team to help health professionals understand the patient perspective of CIs and how CI users obtain their information about CIs. They hope that the results will allow health professionals to improve their patient education regarding cochlear implants. All responses are anonymous and no compensation will be provided.

Dear Friend,

image of girl covering her earsOctober is National Protect Your Hearing Month. As part of HLAA’s goal to bring national attention to hearing loss as a major public health issue, we are promoting October as a month to pay attention to hearing protection. We not only have to push for diagnosing and treating hearing loss, but also preventing it.

Noise-induced hearing loss is completely preventable. And, it’s not reversible.

Thanks to the Hearing Loss Association of America, hi HealthInnovations, and radio stations across the country, public service announcements (PSA) are airing the announcement that October is National Hearing Protection Month. As of October 1, the PSA has already aired on more than 1,100 stations.

Please spread the word especially to young people. Even if you have a hearing loss, it is important to protect what hearing you have. [Read more]

Enjoy the fall weather wherever you are.

HLAA IS WORKING FOR YOU ON
CAPTIONED PHONES

HLAA and Consumer Groups Respond to FCC’s IP CTS Order
HLAA, TDI, and other consumer organizations filed a Petition for Stay on September 30, 2013. Our Petition requests the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) put a hold on implementation of one section of their Internet Protocol Captioned Telephone Services (IP CTS) Order that requires all users to pay a minimum of $75 for the captioned telephones. [Read more and see our petition]

Take the Survey
HLAA is conducting an online survey to learn about the experiences of adults with a hearing loss who use Captioned Telephone Services (CTS). Take the survey. Deadline is October 12, 2013.

Captioned Telephone Industry Responds to FCC’s Order on Captioned Telephone Issues
CaptionCall filed a Petition for Stay with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Their Petition asks the FCC to eliminate any charge for captioned telephone equipment and eliminate the requirement to turn on the caption function each time they turn on the phone. They indicate that the FCC should be asking whether their Order provides individuals equal opportunities to use the phone, not whether the burdens the Order places on people with disabilities are acceptable. [Read who else filed a petition]

FCC Warns of Captioned Phone Scam
The Commission has received information that consumers using Internet Protocol Captioned Telephone Relay Services (IP CTS) may have received calls from one or more persons purporting to be from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), requesting the consumers to schedule a visit to the consumer’s home regarding the consumer’s IP CTS phone. The purpose of this notice is to alert all IP CTS consumers that the FCC has not been scheduling any home visits to IP CTS consumers. [Read more]
