Giving Tuesday Might Be Over,
but the Giving Isn’t!

Thought you missed your chance to donate on #GivingTuesday? Not to worry! Even though Giving Tuesday was a couple of days ago, you can make a donation through December 6.

HLAA is raising money to help veterans with hearing loss get to the HLAA2019 Convention, and your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate $5 or $500. Every little bit helps and donating is easy, so take a minute and follow this link to help support veterans with hearing loss.

Thank you in advance for your support!

HLAA UPDATES

Did You Know the More You Shop the More You Can Support HLAA?
It’s that time of year. We’re getting in the holiday spirit, surrounded by friends, family…and ugly sweaters. But another thing we’re doing is shopping. Americans are expected to spend more than $720 billion during the holidays this year! Just think what could happen if even a small portion of that could go toward helping people with hearing loss. Well, it can.

If you plan on doing any shopping on Amazon – now or any time throughout the year – a portion of what you spend will go to a charity of your choice (think HLAA!) through AmazonSmile. What better gift than to help support people with hearing loss? Learn more.

In a unanimous vote November 15, 2018, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted a Report and Order that will give consumers and the Commission better access to information about the availability of hearing aid compatible (HAC) wireless handsets. This development represents the hard work of the FCC staff as well as HLAA’s work with industry members. It is a case where compromise truly benefits everyone involved! Read more.

ACI Alliance Publishes New Series on Listening Effort and Fatigue
The American Cochlear Implant (ACI) Alliance recently published a two-part blog series on the association between fatigue and listening effort. We hear with our ears but we listen with our brains, and consequently people whose auditory input is of a lesser quality usually expend more mental effort to listen. The fatigue might be described as a feeling of being tired, exhausted or having low energy or low motivation to listen. You can find these extremely informative blog posts by Naama Tsach, Ph.D., on the ACI Alliance website.

HearStrong Foundation Launches Two New Initiatives for People with Hearing Loss
The HearStrong Foundation serves to celebrate individuals worldwide who have not only faced hearing loss, but conquered it with a determined spirit, a focused mind, and an unwavering heart. In order to further support people with hearing loss they have recently launched two new initiatives.

The Pay it Forward program was built in good faith to offer hearing aids to deserving individuals. HearStrong believes it is important to create opportunities for more individuals to receive the devices they need.

The Visionary Fund was created to help visionaries make their dreams a reality. HearStrong believes that any vision can be achieved with the right support. Whether you would like to further the education of yourself or others, provide funding for medical care, start a new business, or train for a competition, etc., the Visionary Fund can help make that possible.

JAN Publishes Annual Report on Workplace Accommodations
The Job Accommodation Network published its annual report on the benefits and costs of workplace accommodations, titled “Accommodation and Compliance: Low Cost High Impact.” The information is gathered from employers who have used JAN's services in the past year. The findings show that 59 percent of accommodations cost nothing to make, while the rest of the accommodations had a typical cost of $500. This is consistent with the results of last year's study, demonstrating that job accommodations generally are not costly. Read the full report.
