Dear HLAA Friends and Supporters,

I remember October 28, 1988, when the HLAA national office staff celebrated the authorization of the new Institute at NIH – the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. This organization helped to get Public Law 100-553 authorized. As The Nation's Voice for People with Hearing Loss, we are proud to be known as your organization.

That’s only one example. After 28 years here at HLAA, what I thought was just doing the good work of the day was actually history in the making. Your organization has been key in passing legislation such as the Americans with Disabilities Act as well as working on numerous national policies. However, we have also initiated a culture change in how people think about hearing loss. We’ve established terms and created awareness so people know that having a hearing loss can mean needing a captioned phone in the workplace, CART in a meeting, or a hearing loop in a public place.

Please read my letter on what history we are making now. (Talk about a culture change!)

Please consider a year-end donation if you haven’t already. Appeals like this are traditions for nonprofit organizations who depend on your support to continue to do the work you believe in.

I believe deeply in our work…I wouldn’t be here for 28 years if I didn’t. Thank you for the time you give in our chapters and at the state and national levels as well as for your financial support.

HLAA Executive Directory, Barbara KelleyI wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me by phone or email.
